Maurice John Scanlon was born in Midvale, UT on April 1st, 1915 - died on June 23, 1999 in Salt Lake City, UT at the age of 84.

His entire working career was in the commercial art field, specializing and mastering Spencerian Round Hand Script. He worked in Los Angeles and Salt Lake City both commercially and as a freelancer.

He was professor of hand lettering for nine years at BYU in Provo, UT and said "that was the best nine years of his life, working with beautiful people".
